The man whose body was found at an east Las Vegas Valley construction site earlier this month died from a fall, the Clark County coroner's office said Wednesday.

His death is being probed by Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigators.

Las Vegas resident Porfirio Gonzalez-Huerta, 49, was found dead at the site, 4131 E. Bonanza Road, near the intersection of Sandhill Road, about 11 a.m. Aug. 3. That is the address of the Equipo Academy charter school, which is scheduled to open later this month, according to its website.

OSHA spokeswoman Teri Williams said details on the investigation might not be available for months.

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (WABC) -- 

A collision between two tractor-trailers has shut down part of the New Jersey Turnpike in East Brunswick.

The fiery crash occurred just after 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Authorities say one tractor-trailer was carrying papers, while the second truck had medical supplies. The material was non-hazardous.

The Turnpike is shut down near exit 9 northbound.

New Jersey State Police say there were minor injuries to drivers.

East River ferry makes hard landing at Pier 11 in Lower Manhattan

NEW YORK, NY -- 

 

An East River ferry made a hard landing Wednesday evening on Lower Manhattan.

According to NY Waterway, a ferry with 36 passengers bumped Pier 11 at Wall Street at 5:45 p.m.

A ferry spokesman says 35 passengers walked away. One woman waited for EMS and was treated on-scene.

There was no damage to the pier or the boat and service has resumed.

The captain of the ferry is speaking with police.

Initial reports from EMS were that six people suffered minor injuries.

Four refused medical attention at the scene, while two were taken to New York Downtown Hospital.

9 more sites in South Bronx test positive for Legionella

SOUTH BRONX, N.Y. (WABC) -- 

 

Nine more sites, including three more in the "impact zone," have tested positive for Legionella bacteria in the South Bronx.

New York City health officials on Wednesday said a total of 20 sites have now tested positive for the bacteria, with 14 of them in the area where most of the cases have originated.

There have been 119 cases of human infection of Legionnaires' disease in the South Bronx. Out of those, 12 people have died.

Wednesday marked the ninth straight day of no new cases being reported. City officials said they believe the spread of the disease is tapering off since cooling towers where the bacteria were found have been cleaned.

Here are the three new places within the impact zone that tested positive for the bacteria:
- Chris' Super Deli, 903 Sheridan Avenue
- Pyramid Safe Haven, 470 E161st Street
- Conway Store, 2952-4 3rd Avenue

The city said each of these sites has either been disinfected or is in the process of being cleaned.


These are the other sites in the impact zone where Legionella was found, and have since been cleaned:

- Concourse Plaza, 198 E. 161st. St.
- Opera House Hotel, 436 E. 149 St.
- Lincoln Hospital, 234 E. 149th St.
- Streamline Plastics, 2950 Park Ave.
- Daughters of Jacob Nursing Home, 1160 Teller Ave.
- Post Office, 558 Grand Concourse
- Verizon, 117 E. 167th St.
- Bronx Housing Courts, 1118 Grand Concourse
- NYC Department of Education 455 Southern Boulevard. Also called Samuel Gompers High School.
- DHS PATH Intake Center, 151 East 151st Street.
- Bronx Hall of Justice, 245 E 161ST Street

And these are the six sites outside of the impact zone in the South Bronx that have been disinfected:

- Verizon, 1106 Hoe Ave.
- Police Dept., 1086 Simpson St.
- Wildcat Academy, 1201 Lafayette Ave.
- 230 East 123rd St.
- St. Barnabas Nursing Home, 2175 Quarry Rd.
- St. Barnabas Hospital, 4422 3rd Avenue

The city said these sites are not necessarily related to the outbreak in the South Bronx.


Last week, Health Commission Dr. Mary Bassett issued an order for mandatory testing of cooling towers across the city.

Bassett said she and other health officials believe the cooling towers were the source of the outbreak, which is the largest in the city's history. They believe the people who contracted the disease breathed mist that was expelled from the infected towers.

CHINA HAS SAFETY ISSUES: Huge explosions in China's Tianjin port area at least kill 17, injure more than 400

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Two massive explosions caused by flammable goods ripped through an industrial area in the northeast Chinese port city of Tianjin late on Wednesday, killing 17 people and injuring around 400, official Chinese media reported.

President Xi Jinping demanded that authorities quickly extinguish the fire caused by the blasts and "make full effort to rescue and treat the injured and ensure the safety of people and their property", China Central Television (CCTV) said on its official microblog.

CCTV said the blasts erupted in a shipment of explosives at around 11:30 p.m. local time (1530 GMT), triggering a blast wave that was felt kilometres (miles) away. The second blast came roughly 30 seconds after the first, state media said.

The official People's Daily newspaper said the death toll was 17 while other state media said three firefighters were among the dead. The official Xinhua news agency said around 400 were hurt.

Video posted on YouTube from what appeared to be an apartment building some distance from the scene showed fire shooting into the night sky from the initial blast when the second, much bigger, explosion rocked the area, sending a huge fireball into the air.

Seconds later, shockwaves hit the apartment building, causing panic among the occupants inside.

Pictures posted on Chinese media websites showed a cloud of dust towering above buildings near the scene. Residents and workers, some bleeding, could be seen fleeing.

Canadian teacher Monica Andrews told the BBC that she awoke in panic after what she thought was an earthquake.

"I ... looked out the window and the sky was red ... I just watched a second explosion go off and (it was) just pure chaos, everyone leaving their apartment buildings thinking it's an earthquake, cars trying to leave the complex and ... it was crazy the amount of light that this explosion and fire lit up," she said.

Xinhua said the explosions had ripped through a warehouse storing "dangerous goods". The first explosion was equivalent to 3 tonnes of TNT and the second blast 21 tonnes of TNT, it said.

 

Residents in nearby areas said the blasts had shattered windows in buildings, it reported.

Citing a local hospital, Xinhua said people had been hurt by broken glass and stones and some were seriously wounded.

CCTV said on its website about 100 fire trucks had been sent to the scene.
Tianjin is home to around 15 million people, making it one of the biggest cities in China. It is also home to one of the country's biggest ports.

Industrial accidents are not uncommon in China following three decades of breakneck economic growth. A blast at an auto parts factory in eastern China killed 75 people a year ago when a room filled with metal dust exploded.
