UPDATE: the construction worker killed today on a site in Sheboygan worked for Superior Masonry Builders out of Waukesha Co. OSHA says the company was cited for a serious violation last year when a worker fell and suffered multiple fractures.  The worker was from Wauwatosa, WI.

Sheboygan police said a 22-year-old construction worker died Thursday morning in what officials described as an “industrial accident” at the site of a new Meijer retail store on the city’s far west side.

The victim died after being pinned between heavy equipment and a wall while pouring concrete, police said in a news release. Police said the incident happened just before 8:30 a.m.

Police said the death was accidental, though an investigation continued later in the day. The victim worked for a company based in Butler, Wisconsin, and police said the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration had been contacted as part of the investigation.


The victim had been working at the site of the new store and not on any other nearby construction projects, police Sgt. Tim Patton confirmed Thursday.

"It's a very tragic situation," Patton said.

On August 9, 2018, at approximately 08:28AM, Sheboygan Police and Sheboygan Fire responded to the Meijer construction site at 3347 Kohler Memorial Drive for an industrial accident. The investigation revealed that construction worker Marcelo Barreiro-Mersfelder, age 22, was killed after becoming pinned between heavy equipment and a wall while pouring concrete at the site. The Sheboygan County Medical Examiner responded and determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma. The Sheboygan Police Department has determined that the death was accidental however the investigation is ongoing. The victim was employed by Superior Masonry Builders Inc. of Butler Wisconsin. The Occupational and Health Administration (OSHA) was contacted as part of the investigation.
