Berkeley County, SC Maintenance worker 65-year-old Clyde McCants of Bonneau died from head trauma when he slipped and fell on ice and snow during the recent snow storm

The Berkeley County Coroner reports that 65-year-old Clyde McCants of Bonneau died when he slipped and fell on ice and snow.

McCants’, a Berkeley County Maintenance worker, accident happened at the Berkeley Maintenance facility on Friday, January 5, according to SCDOT.

McCants was a part of a team that was assigned to clear roads during the snow storm.


He was transported to a local hospital where he died on Tuesday, January 9.

Berkeley County coroner Bill Salisbury said an investigation revealed the man’s death was accidental and that he died from head trauma.

McCants was born in Moncks Corner and graduated from Berkeley High School.

He returned to South Carolina after 10 years of serving as a mission pastor in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

McCants is survived by his wife of 33 years, four step children, nine grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Secretary Hall said, “Mr. McCants represented all the unselfish and dedicated SCDOT workers who put the task of keeping our highways clear above all else in the face of treacherous conditions. The passing of our SCDOT Team member is a terrible and unexpected loss for his family, co-workers and all SCDOT Team members. I would ask all of us at SCDOT to remember Mr. McCants and his family in our thoughts and prayers,” said the Secretary.
