SCHAUMBURG, Ill. -- A fire caused significant damage to a northwest suburban Schaumburg townhouse Saturday.

Firefighters responded to a report of a fire at a townhouse about 11:55 a.m. in the 1000 block of Newport Harbor, according to fire department Battalion Chief Rick Anderson. Fire crews found a female resident of the townhouse on a balcony and were able take her to safety using a ladder. She was transported to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village in good condition to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire was put out in under 15 minutes, but a "hoarding situation" presented issues for firefighters inside the townhouse, Anderson said. Crews removed a significant amount of material from the residence to soak with water to extinguish any hidden fires.

The second floor of the townhouse and attic were destroyed by the fire, Anderson said. The damage was estimated at $150,000.

Residents of three other units in the townhouse complex were able to return to the their homes, Anderson said. Only the unit that burned was deemed uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation Sunday evening.
