Deadly rollover crash on Interstate 95 northbound in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. —A Maine man died Tuesday after a serious crash on Interstate 95 northbound in Portsmouth, according to police.

New Hampshire State Police responded around 3:19 p.m. Police said that a 2003 Mitsubishi Montero, driven by Rodney Hoverson, 54, of Harpswell, Maine, was traveling north on Interstate 95 in the vicinity of Exit 3 when the SUV went off the left side of the roadway, then re-entered the paved portion of the highway

As Hoverson attempted to regain control, the SUV rolled over several times before going off the left side of the highway and into the grass median. The Mitsubishi came to a rest near the southbound breakdown lane of Interstate 95, according to police.

Police said Hoverson was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle as it rolled over. He was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Hoverson's passenger, Darren Carlton, 46, of Vassalboro, Maine, was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with multiple injuries. Police said Carlton was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

The left two travel lanes of Interstate 95 northbound, as well as the left travel lane of Interstate 95 southbound were closed for approximately two hours during the investigation.

The New Hampshire State Police were assisted at the scene by members of the Portsmouth Police Department, the Portsmouth Fire Department, the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.

State police said speed and impairment are possible contributing factors in the crash, but it is still under investigation. No other vehicles were involved.
