OCEANSIDE, CALIFORNIA
A San Diego man who has been under suspicion for nearly a year in a hit-and-run crash that killed an Oceanside bicyclist was arrested this week, authorities said Thursday.
Christopher Noah, 23, active duty with the Navy at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base, was jailed Tuesday on charges of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run, Oceanside police said.
He is suspected of hitting Philip White, 28, of Oceanside, along North River Road near Baker Street on Sept. 21. A city worker found White's body and debris from the crash.
Some of the debris belonged to a lime-green Kia Soul. Camp Pendleton personnel noticed Noah's damaged Kia on the base and he told officials there he had been involved in a collision, Oceanside police Lt. Leonard Cosby said.
Noah contacted police investigators and admitted he was the driver, but that he didn't know he hit anyone, Cosby said.
He said physical evidence from the crash scene contradicted Noah's statement. Cosby did not elaborate on that evidence or why it took investigators 10 months to seek a felony arrest warrant for Noah.
Oceanside police coordinated with the Camp Pendleton base magistrate and Naval Criminal Investigative Service to take Noah into custody.
He was booked into Vista jail with bail set at $50,000. Noah then posted bail and was released, a District Attorney's Office spokesman said. Noah is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 18.
