WOOD-BURNING STOVE PIPING SPARKS OUTER BANKS HOUSE FIRE IN NORTH CAROLINA

FEBRUARY 19, 2015

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (WAVY)

A family in Kill Devil Hills had two fires at their home in as many days.

The first fire sparked Sunday, Feb. 15 around 8:30 p.m. Investigators determined a pipe leading from a wood-burning stove inside sparked a fire in the attic of the home in the 1800 block of Virginia Avenue, according to officials.

The family of four escaped without injury. The fire caused significant damage to the roof, so they had to stay with friends and family.

The following morning, around 2:30 a.m., a neighbor noticed the house was on fire again and called 911. This fire destroyed the second floor and caused significant smoke damage to the first floor. Investigators are still working to determine what caused the second fire.

A pet that escaped during the first fire perished in the second.
