WOOLWORTH MANSION IN GLEN COVE, NEW YORK SUFFERS EXTENSIVE FIRE DAMAGE.  THE CAUSE AND ORIGIN INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY

Authorities say the historic mansion  that was built in 1916 on Long Island built by five-and-dime store founder F.W. Woolworth has sustained extensive damage in a fire.

The blaze erupted Wednesday in a first-floor bedroom of the 16-acre Glen Cove estate.

Fire officials say flames quickly spread through a wing of the 25,000-square-foot 1916 structure.

The owners were not home at the time.

Newsday says the mansion has been owned by Martin Carey, the brother of former New York Gov. Hugh Carey, since 1978.  His accountant, Leonard Fritzson, said the family was distraught.

The fire was not deemed suspicious. The cause is under investigation.
