TRUCK DRIVER DIES
IN I-95 IN PA FIERY CRASH WHEN HIS TRUCK OVERTURNS AFTER COLLISION. A TRACTOR
TRAILER STARTED THE 6-VEHICLE CHAIN REACTION CRASH BY REAR-ENDING 2 CARS
DRIVING NORTH ON I-95 NEAR STREET ROAD.
BENSALEM - Pa. State Police are currently
investigating a fatal crash at I-95 northbound south of Street Rd in Bensalem
Township, Bucks Co.
I-95 reopened shortly before 11:30 p.m. Thursday after
the deadly crash. Some drivers abandoned their vehicles on Thursday after not
moving for hours during rush hour. 6 vehicles were involved in the accident,
including two tractor trailers.
Crews removed what's left of an 18-wheel tractor
trailer. The truck was hauling scrap metal and overturned in a fiery crash in
the northbound lanes of I-95 in Bensalem. The crashed killed the truck
driver.
Latisha Pratt says if she was just driving 30 seconds
earlier she would have been in the wreckage. Instead, she and other drivers
were stuck on the shut down highway for hours. Eventually, she left her car and
walked down the Street Road off-ramp.
Pennsylvania State police say a tractor trailer started
the 6-vehicle chain reaction crash by rear-ending 2 cars driving north on I-95
near Street Road. That's when the scrap metal truck owned by Sims Metal Management
swerved to avoid the others; however, it collided with the other 18-wheeler,
which overturned-- spilling metal all over the highway.
The driver who died has been identified as 58-year-old
Paul Mirys of Trenton. Sims Metal says Mirys was a long time company employee
and was traveling to the company's Morrisville facility at the time of the
crash.
The I-95-northbound lane was shut down through the
afternoon rush hour and into the night. SkyFOX showed the traffic that
stretched for miles as commuters were delayed for more than an hour trying to
get home.
The crash remains under investigation. No word on what
caused the crash.
