DICKSON, Tenn. (WKRN) – A truck driver has been charged
in a crash that killed a 16-year-old Dickson County boy last summer.
Andrew Morton died on June 12 when a truck attempted to
turn left in front of his vehicle on Highway 46 in Dickson.
Morton couldn’t stop in time and slammed into the
trailer, sliding underneath it.
The truck driver, 32-year-old Daniel Maupin, was
indicted on two counts of vehicular homicide last month, one as a result of
reckless driving and one for intoxication.
Blood tests showed Maupin was under the influence of an
intoxicant. His indictment did not identify which intoxicant it was.
Morton’s mother, Rebecca Bear, spoke with News 2
Wednesday about her son.
“He was amazing. He is amazing. People used to tell us
he was like an old soul. He could sit down and talk to someone 90 years old,
and turn around and hold a six month old baby with the same compassion, the
same understanding, the same love,” said Bear.
She said she hopes getting the word out about what
happened to her son will encourage drivers to make better decisions.
“If you take a look back, from June 12 when Andrew lost
his life, there was a series of accidents that happened, and the person that
was the responsible party, they were over 28 years of age and taking young
children’s lives,” said Bear.
Bear said her son loved to hunt, fish, and play
baseball, as well as spend time with his family and friends.
She hopes his story will encourage drivers to make
better decisions.
The investigation into the June 2013 crash is ongoing.
Maupin remains in the Dickson County jail.
