MARION CENTER — An electric wiring problem is suspected of starting a fire that destroyed a wood-framed garage and scorched a nearby house Tuesday afternoon along Oak Street, fire officials said.

The fire began just before 12:30 p.m. while workers were repairing a vehicle in a large, one-car garage. The workers safely escaped the fire and reported that they spotted flames on the wall some distance away from a wood burner, a propane heater and power tools they were using, said Assistant Chief Galen Moore, of the Marion Center fire department.

A volunteer firefighter, Gary Banks of the Marion Center fire company, suffered an apparent second-degree burn on his shoulder while battling the flames, Moore said. Banks was treated and released from Indiana Regional Medical Center.

Moore said Jessica Kirkland owns the garage and has insurance coverage on the loss.

The flames threatened Kirkland’s house.

“It was really close to the house, within about five feet, and we did keep it from reaching the house,” Moore said. “It melted the siding, but we had no water or heat damage inside the house.”

Moore said Marion Center’s water system doesn’t extend as far as Kirkland’s property, and volunteer firefighters relied on shuttling water in tanker trucks to the scene. Fire crews from Plumville, Commodore, Clymer, Rossiter and Perry Township assisted.

The Indiana County rapid-intervention team and The Salvation Army responded to the fire, and the Creekside, Cherryhill Township and Rural Valley fire companies were placed on standby in area fire stations while crews fought the fire.

Marion Center firemen were sent again just before 6 p.m. to douse some flames when the rubble rekindled.

HIGH BRIDGE – The cause of a fire that destroyed two storefronts and six apartments early Wednesday morning is under investigation, according to Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns III.

The seven residents of the apartments and their three pets were able to escape the fire without injury before first-responders arrived at about 1:23 a.m. Kearns said.

The residents and their pets are being housed in the Hampton Inn in Clinton.

The fire also destroyed the Peking Wok Chinese restaurant.

One firefighter from the High Bridge Fire Department suffered an ankle injury during the fire and was transported to the Hunterdon Medical Center for treatment, Kearns said.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire from spreading to a neighboring property.

Cause of the fire is being investigated by the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office Arson Investigation Unit, the Hunterdon County Arson Task Force and the High Bridge Police Department, the prosecutor said.

Responding to the fire were the High Bridge Fire Department, Lebanon Township Fire Department, Lebanon Borough Fire Department, Clinton Township Fire Department, Quakertown Fire Department, Califon Fire Department, Whitehouse Fire Department, Washington Township Fire Department, High Bridge Rescue Squad, Hampton Rescue Squad, Lebanon Township Rescue Squad, Hunterdon County CART Team and the American Red Cross.

"I would like to commend all our volunteers that responded to last night's fire," Kearns said. "These dedicated men and women left the security of their homes and braved the harsh elements to save lives and protect property. Due to their quick actions and expertise, a home adjacent to the building fire was saved from almost certain destruction."

An oil worker died last week on a rig in Johnson County. Twenty-five year old Joshua Adam was killed Thursday at an Anschutz Corporation well site near Gillette. He was working for Texas-based contractor Basic Energy Services.

Hayley McKee, a spokeswoman for the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services, writes in an email that the incident happened during a well servicing operation. Adam’s death was caused by “an unexpected vertical movement of an oil derrick.” He died on site.

The incident is the first oil and gas worker fatality in Wyoming this year. In 2014, at least three oil and gas workers died in the state.

An oil service company owner has died and another employee was injured while repairing equipment at a QEP Resources oil well location near Mandaree.

According to initial reports from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Bismarck office, the incident involving Legendary Field Services of Watford City occurred Tuesday afternoon.

Office supervisor Eric Brooks said it appears from preliminary reports that the men were removing a tube on the well heater component when fluids somehow ignited. Both men were burned and the owner’s injuries were fatal, he said.

The OSHA investigation will continue.

This is the first oilfield fatality reported for 2015 and the first since Nov. 18, when Daniel Kintyhht, 32, died from a head injury after slipping and falling on an icy rig mat on a Nabors Drilling USA rig located south of Williston.

Crane comes down in Moscow due to High Winds

Exceptionally strong winds are blamed for the collapse of a tower crane in central Moscow yesterday.

The crane looks like a fairly dated bottom slewing luffing tower crane, its triangular section tower and jib blew over the back of the machine base, with part of it apparently striking the rear end of a passing car. However no one was injured in the incident, which occurred in Testovskaya Ulitsa in the business district. More modern top slewers nearby were unaffected by the winds.

A crawler crane overturned on a wind farm in Janneby, near Flensburg, Germany, last Friday during severe gale force winds.

The crane, a large Liebherr owned by Sarens, was fully rigged with around 100 metres of boom and back mast. All of which went over the back over the crane in the high winds.

No one was injured in the incident and fortunately the boom missed three turbine tower sections which were awaiting installation.

EAST LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- 

A big rig hauling a load of TVs caught fire on the 10 Freeway near Cal State Los Angeles, shutting down all westbound lanes at the 710 Freeway.
The truck fire was reported near the Eastern Avenue exit just after 11 a.m. Tuesday. Due to the container full of televisions, a hazmat team was called to the scene.

No injuries were reported.
The fire happened on the 10 West beneath the Eastern Avenue overcrossing. Inspectors examined the structure and determined the overcrossing was not compromised.

Westbound lanes of the 10 Freeway reopened just before 4:30 p.m. after a five-hour closure. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
