MAUI MAN ARRESTED FOR NEGLIGENT HOMICIDE OF A BICYCLIST
LAST APRIL 2014
January 23, 2014
A Maui man was arrested
Friday morning for negligent homicide in connection with a deadly crash that occurred last April.
On Saturday, April 12,
2014, police say Michael Angelo Cattaneo, 29, of Kula, was driving a pickup
truck north-bound on Piilani Highway when he drifted into the bicycle lane and
struck Karl Hagen, 61, of Wailea.
It happened at around
1:12 p.m. nearly a mile north of Kanani Road.
Hagen was taken to Maui
Memorial Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
Cattaneo was arrested on
a warrant following an indictment of the following charges: two counts of
first-degree negligent homicide, operating a vehicle under the influence (of
drugs) and no no-fault insurance. His bail was set at $100,000.
According to Sgt.
Williams Hankins of the Maui Police Department’s Vehicle Homicide Section,
Cattaneo’s arrest was the result of hundreds of hours spent reconstructing the
crash by highly trained investigators.
“Families of crash
victims who are killed or seriously injured deserve justice,” he said. “It is
the goal of the Maui Police Department Vehicle Homicide Section to thoroughly
investigate these crashes and work with the prosecutor’s office to hold those
responsible for their actions. We owe it to the victim and their family members
to help bring closure from these avoidable crashes.”
