BROOKLYN FIRE INSIDE A HARDWARE STORE AT 265 FLATBUSH AVENUE LEAVES 1 DEAD AND 8 OTHERS INJURED
A
46-year-old man was killed and at least eight other people were injured early
Wednesday in a five-alarm building fire in Brooklyn, officials said.
The blaze,
inside a hardware store at 265 Flatbush Avenue, was reported just after 3:30
a.m. and drew nearly 200 firefighters to the building in Prospect Heights,
according to the Fire Department. The fire burned for hours and was not brought
under control until shortly before 8:30 a.m., the Fire Department said.
The cause
of the man’s death had not been determined. The police said the body was recovered
in the rear of 267 Flatbush Avenue.
In addition
to the man who died, three people were hospitalized with serious injuries and
five with minor injuries. Two of the injured were firefighters, both with minor
injuries, the Fire Department said.
The
cause of the fire had not been determined.
The
Daily News reported that the man who died was the owner of a deli who was
forced to leap from his fourth-floor window, because flames had blocked all
routes of escape.
