Crash happened Monday morning near South End Road
CANBY, Ore. (KOIN 6) — The driver and a young passenger
in a Hyundai were killed Monday in Clackamas County after the car swerved
across the center line of Highway 99E and into an oncoming semi truck’s path,
Oregon State Police officials have confirmed.
Emergency responders found around 10:30 a.m. a mangled
scene near milepost 17 in Canby, where a gray 2000 Hyundai Accent collided with
the semi, which was carrying a flat bed trailer loaded with an asphalt roller.
Investigators are still unsure what caused the car to
move into oncoming traffic.
The driver of the Hyundai was pronounced dead on the
scene. The driver’s passenger, a girl under the age of 18, was flown to Oregon
Health Sciences University with critical injuries and died around 12:47 p.m.
authorities said in a later release. An initial report the girl died in the
wreck was incorrect, OSP officials said.
The driver of the semi-truck was unhurt.
A small amount of diesel fuel was spilled in the crash,
according to OSP. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality was called to
help clean the spill, estimated at under 50 gallons.
The highway will remain closed for much of the afternoon
south of Oregon City between South End Road and 2nd Street as law enforcement
investigates the crash. Travelers may follow a detour using 2nd Street and
South End Road.
