FALL RIVER — A man died Sunday evening after he lost control of his scooter and collided into an oncoming motor vehicle at South Main and Williams streets, police said.
The Fall River Police Department did not immediately release the man's name. Police officers were verifying the man's identity and notifying his relatives on Sunday evening, Fall River police Lt. Paul Santos said.
The accident occurred around 5:09 p.m. Santos said the initial investigation, conducted by Fall River police officer Bryan Nadeau, indicates that the scooter was traveling north on South Main Street when the operator apparently lost control and swerved into the oncoming motor vehicle.
The scooter's operator was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The operator of the other vehicle involved was not injured, Santos said.
At the crash site, police officers used yellow crime scene tape to block off the intersection, which was littered with debris, including a thin motorcycle helmet. Police officers also secured the scooter and took measurements as part of the official accident reconstruction.
A civilian witness at the scene said he saw the man lying on the roadway with an apparent head injury. The witness said people in the area yelled to someone who had approached the man, “Don’t touch him!”
Paramedics placed an oxygen mask over the man’s face, placed him on a stretcher and moved him into a waiting ambulance, the witness said.
Fall River police and firefighters cleared the scene just after 7:30 p.m. The scooter was taken away on a tow truck.
Santos said the cause of this accident is still under investigation, and he urged anyone who may have witnessed the accident or have furhter information to contact the Fall River Police Department at 508-676-8511 or to call the police department’s anonymous tips line at 508-672-TIPS.
