LORAIN, Ohio --
A pair of 17-year-old boys were hurt in an early morning crash Monday.
Police say it happened around 12:42 a.m. when a 1999 Honda Ulx lost control while crossing the railroad tracks northbound on Kansas Avenue at a high rate of speed.
The vehicle went off the right side of the road before striking a utility pole. The car then re-entered the roadway and went off the left side before traveling through several front yards and colliding with a parked Ford Explorer.
At that point, authorities say the Honda hit a residence in the 400 block of Kansas Avenue. The vehicle finally came to rest after rotating and striking a tree.
The Honda then reportedly caught fire.
Responders extricated both teens from inside the vehicle with the help of several citizens.
Police say the driver sustained "incapacitating injuries" as a result of the crash. He was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center and then flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. He is listed in critical condition.
The front-seat passenger sustained "very severe incapacitating injuries," police say. He was reportedly unconscious at the scene when authorities arrived. He was also initially taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center before being flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland with life-threatening injuries. Police say he is listed in "very critical condition."
The roadway was closed for approximately three hours while investigators worked at the scene.
The home struck in the crash "sustained substantial structural damage in the collision," according to police.
Authorities say it does not appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. The question is how they determined that, as the teens were unconscious. Most likely these two were drunk and/or drugged.
No charges have been filed at this time, but the case will be presented to the Lorain County Prosecutor's Office once the investigation is complete.
Anybody who may have information or witnessed the crash is asked to call the Lorain Police Department Traffic Bureau at 440-204-2115.
The names of the teens were released by police, but WKYC has chosen not to publish them at this time since both are minors.
