Fatal Crash on 10 Freeway Shuts Down All Eastbound Lanes in Mid-City

All eastbound lanes of the 10 Freeway in the Mid-City area of Los Angeles were reopened after a fiery fatal crash prompted the closure of the roadway ahead of the Monday morning rush-hour commute, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision, which involved at least six vehicles and left one car in flames, occurred about 3:45 a.m. on the eastbound 10 near the La Brea Avenue off ramps, CHP’s incident log stated.

One person was killed in the crash, according to CHP. The victim’s identity has not been released.

Authorities also did not immediately indicate whether any other injuries were reported.

A SigAlert was issued by CHP around 4:25 a.m., and all lanes on the eastbound roadway were initially closed for an undetermined amount of time.

For several hours, traffic was being diverted through the La Brea collector, a single far right lane separated by a divider that leads to the north and southbound exits, and can also be used to access the 10 from the on ramp. 
Since the lane originates on the freeway, it allows vehicles already on the roadway to either exit or continue on the eastbound 10.

An estimated time for the closures was not immediately provided, but by 5:50 a.m., video from the scene showed that the far left lane of the eastbound freeway had been reopened. At the time, the remaining three lanes were still closed, and the crash scene had yet to be cleared.

But by 7:45 a.m., the SigAlert was canceled and the freeway was fully reopened.

The cause of the collision was under investigation.
