SPRINGFIELD, MO -- Fire investigators say an oxy-acetylene torch to cut metal was likely the cause of a massive industrial fire Jan. 6.
Firefighters battled the blaze overnight at Tri-State Pallet Inc. at 270 Monroe Street.

Investigators say they believe the torch was being used to cut metal from the southeast corner of the building. They interviewed about a dozen people and gathered evidence from the building's sprinkler system, which indicated the system first detected activation in the southeast corner of the building.

Fire officials say the metal being cut from the building did not happen with the building owner's approval.

Firefighters battles the flames beginning about 6:30 p.m. Jan. 6. Flames were shooting through the building's roof when crews arrived.
