An employee with the Florida Department of Transportation checking on a tree-trimming crew on State Road 40 near Pierson on Tuesday was struck by a vehicle, Florida Highway Patrol investigators said.
Ronda Daniell, 50, of Williston is in serious but stable condition at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach where she was taken by helicopter, said Sgt. Kim Montes, FHP spokeswoman.
The crash occurred just west of County Road 3 in Barberville about 12:10 p.m.
Daniell had stopped to check on a tree crew working on the side of the road. She parked on the east shoulder of the road and crossed to talk to the workers. As she walked back to her vehicle, she stepped out into the path of westbound traffic and was struck, Montes said.
The driver of the vehicle, James Moore, 75, of Atlantic Beach, could not stop in time. He was not injured, Montes said.
The crash remains under investigation but troopers said they do not expect to file charges in the case.
Be careful when you walk on the roads. A safety vest will not necessarily prevent a crash.

PIERSON, Fla. - A female Florida Department of Transportation employee was struck by a vehicle and injured Tuesday in Volusia County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported on State Road 40 at Warransford Road in Pierson.
Troopers said a contractor was clearing trees near SR 40, and officials were directing traffic in the area.
A woman who was wearing a safety vest arrived at the site, got out of her vehicle and started talking to the workers clearing the trees, the FHP said.
Troopers said she walked in front of traffic and was struck by a vehicle. She was taken as a trauma alert patient to Halifax Hospital.
The driver will not face charges, the FHP said.
