A man remains in the hospital after officials said he crashed his boat into the base of the Atlantic Beach Bridge.

Chief Warrant Officer Keith Moore with the U.S. Coast Guard reported they got the call just after 10 A.M. Sunday morning that a man operating a 23 foot Sea Ray hit the base of the Atlantic Beach Bridge while trying to pass another boat.

The Coast Guard said the man was thrown from the boat and suffered non life-threatening injuries to both of his arms and possibly his head.

The man is not being identified; he was medically evacuated from the boat and then transported to the hospital. There was a female passenger on board who was not injured.

Previous Story

A 66-year-old man was transported to the hospital with injuries to both of his arms and a possible head injury after a boat he was on hit the base of the Atlantic Beach Bridge.

Chief Warrant Officer Keith Moore with the U.S. Coast Guard says they got the call at 10:07 this morning that a 23-foot Sea Ray boat hit the base of the Atlantic Beach Bridge while trying to pass another boat.

The man was thrown from the boat and suffers from non-life threatening injuries. There was also a 65-year-old woman on-board who was able to stay on the boat and has no injuries.

The Coast Guard says the man was medically evacuated by a Coast Guard 24-foot small boat to the N.C. Wildlife ramp in Morehead City. EMS was waiting at the ramp and evaluated the man's injuries before transporting him to Carteret General hospital.

Chief Moore says the man and woman were out on a leisure ride when the accident happened.

He says it's uncommon for boats to strike the bottom of bridges like this. Perhaps this old boater was drunk.
