A deadly three-vehicle crash shut down I-78 in both directions on Saturday.



Unfortunately one one of the drivers apparently did not get out, and died, according to state police.

The tanker truck, a tractor trailer and a car collided just before 1:00 Saturday afternoon near the Garden State Parkway in Union.

Just before 4 p.m., Eastbound and Westbound local lanes reopened. Express Eastbound and Westbound lanes will remain closed throughout the night.

A driver was seen on video escaping the massive blaze that resulted from a truck crash on Route 78 in Union by crawling out of the windshield of the his cab. One driver was killed in the crash, according to State Police.

State police spokesman Sgt. Gregory Williams said a tractor-trailer, a fuel tanker and an Audi were involved in the crash. The fuel tanker, which was “fully loaded and carrying 9,000 gallons of fuel” became engulfed in flames following the crash, sending thick smoke and fire shooting up from the scene, according to Williams.

Williams confirmed that one of the truck drivers did escape through the windshield of his truck cab, as was recorded by a passing driver.





Authorities say one person is dead after a crash that caused a fuel tanker explosion on I-78 in Union Township.

The accident happened shortly after 1 p.m. near Exit 52 for the Garden State Parkway.

The tanker, which was carrying up to 9,000 gallons of fuel, erupted in massive flames after crashing into the rear of a tractor-trailer. A car that was trailing those two trucks then rear-ended them.
