LORENA - A Bruceville-Eddy teen is lucky to be alive
after a horrific crash in Lorena sent him and another man to the hospital.
Almost a dozen first responders were called out just after 11:15 a.m. Tuesday morning for an accident on Old Lorena Road. Firefighters worked for nearly an hour to save a man trapped inside a car underneath a flatbed truck.
The accident blocked off parts of Old Lorena Road for hours as firefighters called a crane to the scene to lift the commercial truck.
Lorena Police Chief Tom Dickson says they're not sure what caused the crash.
"The truck veered off the road, hit the school speed limit sign, and went airborne and landed on top of the car that was coming out of the parking lot,” says Dickson.
Once lifted, rescue crews used the Jaws of Life to remove the mangled car roof.
Chief Dickson says he and the other first responders were amazed at what they saw when they finally got to the driver.
“He seems to be in relatively good condition, considering the damage that was done to the car,” says Dickson. “He gave us thumbs up and he's talking to us and he's very, very lucky.”
18-year-old Jeremy Harris had no life threatening injuries, but remains in the hospital under observation. The 55-year-old truck driver, Larry Halbert, was rushed into surgery. We have no word on his condition.
Police and accident reconstruction teams say they're still investigating what caused the driver to lose control in the first place.
