A judge has sentenced a man to 12 years in a crash that left two women dead and injured four young children in December 2013, the Office of the State's Attorney for Prince George's County said.
Ronald Hayes pleaded guilty to two counts of negligent motor vehicle manslaughter following the 2013 crash in which he hit a minivan carrying six people.
Hayes was found guilty on both counts and will serve 12 years consecutively with credit for time served. He was also sentenced to five years on probation.
"Mr. Hayes' breathtaking disregard for human life resulted in the deaths of two beautiful young women, robbing them of the promise they had shown and devastating two families forever," Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks said.
"His cowardly action to flee the scene after the accident, still trying to evade police, tells me that he deserves every day of the sentence he received and I am pleased that we have removed him from our community."
Police responded to the 7100 block of Walker Mill Drive for reports of a shooting on December 8, 2013. When they got to the scene they found a dark colored Infiniti, which Hayes was driving. Officers tried to stop him, however he fled from the scene. Hayes turned off his headlights in order to avoid officers but a helicopter was able to follow him.
Hayes ran through a red light at the intersection of Hill Road and Central Avenue, and hit the Dodge Minivan with six people inside.
The woman driving the van and the female front passenger were both killed. Four children, including a 10-month-old and two-year-old were injured.
Hayes fled the crash scene on foot but police were able to apprehend him.
