Two people killed in separate Grimes County,
Texas crashes of 18-wheelers and trucks
Troopers investigated two fatal accidents in Grimes
County within seven hours of each other on Friday. A 35-year-old Lexington man
died near Navasota when the 18-wheeler he was driving west on Texas 105 drifted
into the eastbound lane and sideswiped a pickup just before 8:30 a.m.,
according to Texas Department of Public Safety investigators.
The 2014 Peterbilt semi, owned by Performance
Contracting Inc., drove through the eastbound guardrail and into an embankment
near a creek, coming to rest on its side, investigators said.
Trooper Jimmy Morgan said conditions were wet at the
time of the accident but weather was not believed to be a factor.
The driver, Daniel Eugene Mayfield, was wearing a seat
belt but took no evasive action, Morgan added. The investigation is ongoing.
Mayfield was pronounced dead at the scene and was taken
to Lindley-Robertson-Holt Funeral Home in Navasota.
The driver of the pickup, a 25-year-old Bryan woman,
sustained minor injuries and was treated at Scott and White hospital in College
Station.
Troopers investigated a second fatal accident northwest
of Iola at 3:40 p.m.
Few details were available late Friday but DPS
dispatchers said one person died in a one-vehicle wreck on County Road 104.
