A church bus caught fire on Green Bay’s west side late Friday afternoon and burned in a parking lot on Shawano Avenue, just west of Gray Street.
The bus was carrying about 30 children from Immanuel Baptist Church in Wausau to a religious conference in Green Bay.
The bus driver’s wife, Kristy Sterken, says they noticed mechanical problems with the engine and pulled into the parking lot. Someone noticed smoke coming from under the bus.
Police say everyone evacuated the bus safely. Sterken tells Action 2 News the children didn’t seem very scared and got off the bus in a very orderly fashion.
No one was hurt.
The kids were picked up by Green Bay Metro, which bused them to the FLD Districts Youth Conference at the KI Convention Center.
Shawano Avenue was briefly closed to traffic for the fire-fighting effort.
