NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WARNS OF POSSIBLE 'FLASH FREEZING' TONIGHT IN NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK AND ADJACENT STATES

Burlington County residents didn't have to dig out from much snow Monday morning, but their return home Monday evening could be treacherous, as rapidly decreasing temperatures are expected to cause roads and sidewalks to freeze.

The National Weather Service warned that "flash freeze" conditions were expected in the county, along with wind gusts of up to 45 mph.

"Wet roadways and sidewalks will become icy very quickly this afternoon and evening, resulting in hazardous travel conditions," the weather service warned.

The sudden freezing could prove more dangerous than the overnight precipitation. A mere 1 to 2 inches of snow were measured across much of Burlington County before the mix of snow and sleet changed to rain.

Two inches were measured in Florence, 1.2 inches in Evesham, 1.1 inches in Westampton and an inch in Hainesport, the weather service reported.

No serious accidents were reported in the county during Monday morning's commute, but firefighters in several river towns were called to extinguish a fire in the basement of a home on Warren Street in Edgewater Park.

The call came in shortly after 9 a.m. Firefighters from Beverly and other towns quickly extinguished the blaze. No injuries were reported, officials said.

The rain continued through midafternoon, when more snow showers are possible.

State offices opened late, but most Burlington County schools opened on time. NJ Transit is cross-honoring tickets system-wide.
