RAPID CITY, SOUTH DACOTA —

A Rapid City, SD woman died Saturday afternoon in a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 90.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., Victoria Frances Bates, 20, was driving a 2000 GMC SUV eastbound on I-90 at mile marker 56.  The roadway was ice covered from the thick fog, and as the vehicle was traveling around a left-hand curve, the driver lost control. The vehicle slid into the south ditch and rolled multiple times.

Bates was thrown from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. She was not wearing a seat belt. A passenger received serious non-life threatening injuries in the crash and was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital. He also was not wearing a seat belt.

The crash had traffic backed up and at a stop and go pace from the Black Hills National Cemetery to Deadwood Avenue in Rapid City. The Department of Transportation eventually closed the interstate at Sturgis.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Rapid City Police Department and Rapid City Fire Department assisted.
Multiple other accidents including roll-over accidents were reported Saturday.
