Springfield, Massachusetts home destroyed in early morning fire

SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP) — An 80 year-old grandmother and her son have been forced from their Springfield home after a devastating fire early Friday morning.
Firefighters were called to 31 Oak Grove Avenue at around 4:15 A.M. January 2, 2014. Dennis Leger, aide to the Springfield Fire Commissioner, told 22News that the residents of the home did manage to get out safely.
India Tucker-Ross, the granddaughter of the homeowner, told 22News that her grandmother was taken to Mercy Medical Center to be checked out, because she is diabetic and her family is concerned for her health.
After fighting the flames for about two hours, firefighters were able to recover a few of the homeowner’s belongings, including medications and photo albums, as well as some picture frames.
Tucker-Ross said that the family is sad to see the destruction of the home in which many of them grew up, but she added that they are grateful everyone made it out safely.
The Red Cross is assisting the fire victims.
