1 person hurt in Edgewater Beach high-rise (breakers community for senior citizens) fire on the North Side of

One person was injured Friday morning when a fire broke out in a high-rise apartment building in the Edgewater Beach neighborhood on the North Side.
The person was taken in serious condition to Weiss Memorial Hospital, according to fire officials.
The fire broke out around 9 a.m. on the 26th floor of the building at 5333 N. Sheridan Road, Chicago, Illinois according to Fire Department spokesman Will Knight.
The fire was quickly put out and smoke did not spread through the building, fire officials said.
No other information was available.

CHICAGO
(CBS) –
An elderly woman was critically injured Friday morning in a fire at a high-rise
building in the Edgewater Beach neighborhood.
The
fire started just before 8:45 a.m. on the 26th floor of The Breakers, a
34-story senior residential building on the 5300 block of North Sheridan Road.
The fire was contained to a single apartment, where a woman in her 80s had been
severely burned.
“They
found the victim in that apartment, (and she) was quickly removed. Sprinklers
had activated, and had basically extinguished the fire,” Deputy District Fire
Chief John Sheahan said.
The
woman was conscious when she was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital in “very
critical” condition. She later was transferred to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital
of Cook County, which has a level one trauma center. Sources said she suffered
burns to 90 percent of her body.
Firefighters
were investigating whether a cigarette might have sparked the blaze.
No
other injuries were reported.
