Schlumberger warns of more North Sea job loses
Published in Oil Industry News on Saturday, 17 January 2015Schlumberger bosses today warned that if the company continues to make financial losses in the first half of this year, more North Sea oil jobs were likely to go.
The firm has already confirmed it is slashing 9000 jobs globally with 100 North Sea jobs affected. Schlumberger employs 126,000 people globally and the confirmed cuts mean a reduction of around 7% to its workforce.
The oil services company has offices in Aberdeen and Westhill with more than 5000 employees. Oil and Gas People understands that jobs both on and offshore will go but Schlumberger has not confirmed exact numbers. A spokesperson for the company said that employees would be told within the next three months if they have lost their job.
Schlumberger is one of many large companies in the sector that has announced job cuts in the last two months with many other companies cutting contractor rates and freezing pay.
The news comes just a day after Union bosses urged companies not to make redundancies and to protect the long term integrity of the industry.
