Crews battle large fire at newly constructed Fishers apartments in Indiana.
Fire burns in 12-degree temperatures, wind chill
FISHERS, Ind. - A powerful fire drew emergency crews to a newly constructed (partially completed) apartment complex in Fishers early Tuesday morning.
The Fishers Police Department (FPD) confirmed around 5:30 a.m. that the intersection of 131st Street and Cumberland Road was shut down while crews responded to the fire. (See map below.)
A 911 caller had reported smoke and flames through the roof.
RTV6's Julie Pursley says the building on fire was in the process of being built, and no injuries have been reported.
Fishers officials said the apartments are called the Flats at Fishers. It did not have electricity yet.
We're told construction crews were still in the dry-wall phase in the upper levels of the U-shaped building, so there was a lot of open space that allowed the fire to spread.
At least 50 firefighters were on the scene from Fishers, Carmel, Noblesville and Indianapolis fire departments.
Firefighters' gear was freezing over, as temperatures were in the low teens with wind chills. They said layers of ice were forming on their coats and helmets. A bus was brought in so fire crews could go inside, sit down and warm up.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
