TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Residents from two homes were
evacuated early Sunday morning after a car crashed into a nearby house, which
caused a large gas leak.
According to Northwest Fire, a 44-year-old male sustained
minor injuries after crashing his car into a house near the 7100 block of North
Via Venezia, near Ina and Oracle Roads, just before 4:30 a.m.
During the crash, the man's car struck a gas meter,
which caused significant damage to the gas meter and underground lines. Fire
crews were unable to secure the gas leak and Southwest Gas was called to the
scene to secure the leak.
Seven residents from two nearby homes were evacuated
following the crash. A Northwest Fire Hazmat engine company was also called to
the scene to assist with the gas leak and to monitor the air quality to ensure
more residents would not need to be evacuated.
After the leak was secured, the evacuated residents were
allowed back into their homes. The hazmat crews at the scene detected no gas in
the area and Southwest Gas was able to shut off the flow of gas to the damaged
meter.
The Pima County Sheriff's Department is investigating
the cause of the car crash.
Northwest Fire reminds everyone that if you hear a
hissing noise from any gas meter or if you smell a "rotten egg" odor,
please evacuate the area and call 911 or contact Southwest Gas.
