ERIE COUNTY, NY
One man was killed and a woman was hospitalized following a pair of ATV crashes investigated by the Erie County Sheriff’s Department over the weekend, sheriff’s officials reported Monday.
The fatal crash occurred Sunday morning on the Tonawanda Indian Reservation in the Town of Newstead, claiming the life of Robert Johannes, 27, of Akron.
Deputies responded to a call from a passing motorist about an ATV off the roadway on Skye Road, between Cedar and Scotland roads.
The motorist saw the vehicle crashed against a tree but initially didn’t see the driver. Sheriff’s deputies and fire personnel arrived and found Johannes pinned in the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The earlier crash occurred at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday on East Holland Road in the Town of Holland, where an ATV operator was traveling on private property when her ATV flipped over. The operator was pinned under the vehicle and was taken later to Erie County Medical Center with back injuries.
A male passenger was ejected from the ATV, suffering minor injuries. Their names have not been released.
Charges may be pending in that crash, sheriff’s deputies said.
