CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -
All lanes of Interstate 95 are back open after a tractor trailer crash blocked northbound lanes earlier Wednesday, spilling dry ice onto the road.
The crash happened shortly before 11:30 a.m., south of Route 288, just past the exit to Route 10 (mile marker 61). The driver, 33-year-old Brian M. Whitfield of Petersburg, was taken to Chippenham Hospital along with a passenger, both with non-life threatening injuries. Virginia State Police say both were wearing their seatbelts at the time.
The driver was transported to Chippenham Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
According to police, the truck was hauling 30,000 to 35,000 pounds of dry ice from Hopewell to Harrisonburg. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
The left lane was eventually reopened while the right and center lanes remained closed for cleanup. VDOT says that as of 5:30, all lanes were reopened. At one point, the backup extended at least six miles.
State Police say Whitfield was charged with Reckless Driving and Driving on a Suspended Operators License.
