BARGE BURNS IN MISSISSIPPI RIVER WHEN OIL ABSORBENT PADS CAUGHT FIRE

February 5, 2015

HARTFORD, Ill. – A barge caught fire in the Mississippi River Thursday afternoon.

Matt Marler from the U.S. Coast Guard says absorbent pads placed in the water during dredging caught fire.

Chief Bernie Sebold with the Alton Fire Department says his department was called in to help, but they can't because their boat is iced-in. Fire departments in South Roxana and Madison were also called in to help, but couldn't because of icy river conditions.

There's no word yet on what sparked the fire.
