State police identified a state trooper and an armored truck
driver injured in a crash on eastbound I-70 near the Washington County line
Monday afternoon.
Master Trooper Lester Leggett was walking back to his patrol
cruiser along the right shoulder of eastbound I-70 just west of Md. 17 after
wrapping up a traffic stop on a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe around 2 p.m., according
to a state police press. Leggett's cruiser was parked directly behind the
Hyundai, the release states.
As Leggett was still outside his cruiser, a Brinks security
truck headed east swerved, lost control and struck the guardrail, Leggett's
cruiser and the Hyundai, according to the release.
Leggett was knocked to the ground and taken to the Frederick
Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, while the truck driver, James Kenneth
Williams III, of the 1200 block of Damsel Road in Essex, Maryland, was flown to
the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment, the release
states.
The driver of the Hyundai, Kelly Hepburn, of the 1100 block
North Franklin Street in Wilmington, Delaware, was not injured, police said.
The release did not cite any further details regarding any
charges or what caused the truck to lose control, but an officer at the scene,
Trooper First Class Granville Fairbanks, said the truck swerved to avoid
striking a vehicle in front of it that had slammed on its brakes.
