VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach police confirm alcohol was involved in a crash Friday morning that killed a woman and injured her passenger.

After a report of a single-vehicle crash, police were dispatched to the 2500 block of Shore Drive, just after 2:30 a.m.

Police said 31-year-old Meaghan Elizabeth Darling was driving a 2004 Volvo S-70 Station Wagon east on Shore Drive when she continued straight into the median and hit two trees.

When officers arrived, they found Darling deceased and a male passenger with life-threatening injuries. The man was transported to a local hospital, where he remains under treatment.

10 On Your Side spoke with a friend of the driver, who said Darling was a single mom and a good friend. WAVY.com also learned the crash happened about a mile from where Darling lived.

Shore Drive was shut down in both directions from 83rd Street to First Landing State Park while police investigated the crash scene.
