Kittanning, PA
A man working on a road crew on Market Street
in Kittanning was severely injured and flown to Allegheny General
Hospital in Pittsburgh because an excavator backed over him Thursday
morning.
The excavator driver was looking for
oncoming traffic and didn't see the man directly behind him standing
with his back to the heavy machinery. The worker, Zane Campbell, 20, of
Kittanning, had his legs pinned to the ground by the excavator, police
said.
“I don't think he'll lose his legs, but it
was a pretty severe injury,” said West Kittanning policeman Robert
Gahagan, who assisted at the scene.
Hospital officials were not able to provide Campbell's condition late Thursday afternoon.
Ashlynn Bashline of Kittanning, who was
working a block away at one of the sidewalk sales held before the start
of the Fort Armstrong Folk Festival, ran to the accident scene when she
heard screams.
“I saw the guy lying on the ground, yelling, ‘My legs, my legs!' ” Bashline said.
Campbell, who works for Area Wide Protective
Traffic Control of Cheswick, was directing traffic at the site where
Peoples Natural Gas in Pittsburgh is replacing gas lines. Police did not
identify the driver of the excavator.
Erin O'Donnell, spokeswoman for Peoples
Natural Gas, said the company did not have many details about what
happened but has notified Campbell's family of the accident.
Kittanning police Officer Donald Blose said he does not expect charges to be filed against the excavator driver
