Two people from Johnson City were hospitalized after a boating accident on Cayuga Lake over the weekend.
On Friday night, sheriff’s deputies from Seneca County responded to the area of Sheldrake Point in Ovid for a boating accident.
The operator, Daniel Balmer, 45, of Johnson City, was heading south on Cayuga Lake when he struck a “wooden structure and metal light post” off of the shore, according to the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office.
Balmer sustained injuries to his face and head as a result of the accident. He was transported to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse by ambulance.
Another passenger in the boat, Marguerite Malone, 35, of Johnson City, sustained facial injuries and was also transported to Upstate Medical Center.
The boat is believed to be a “total loss” after sustaining heavy damage, the sheriff’s office reports.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by New York State Police and the Interlaken and Ovid fire departments.
