CONOVER, NORTH CAROLINA

Four people, including 2 firefighters, were hurt after a reported explosion in Conover.

The call came in around 2:15 p.m. Monday at a welding and grading business on Highway 16 North near C and B Farm Road in Conover.  Investigators said something at the business exploded, but have not said what the cause may have been.. The flames at the house on Highway 16 were contained about two hours later.

One person was airlifted to a burn unit in Wake Forest. That victim's burns cover 60 to 80 percent of his body.

A local hospital is treating the other victim, who family members say is the other's brother.

Two firefighters were injured, as well. They are expected to be okay.

The fire department says an explosion was reported at a welding and grading business behind the home at the intersection of C&B Farm Road.

At least 40 firefighters responded to the scene.

Smoke could be seen several miles away. One person even saw the smoke in Taylorsville in Alexander County.

A portion of Highway 16 was closed between C&B Farm Rd. and Shook Rd. but it reopened around 5:30.
