A
22-year-old Santa Clara woman driving the wrong way on the highway in Fremont
was killed early Friday in a fiery crash, and three men she hit in an oncoming
2004 Chevy Silverado suffered major injuries, according to the California
Highway Patrol.
The
aftermath of the scene on northbound Interstate Highway 880 near Thornton
Avenue showed a charred mangled mess of metal. Fire crews were seen hosing down
a 1999 Volvo S-80 and the SUV, which had broken in two.
CHP Officer
Daniel Hill said the Volvo entered I-880 southbound driving north at Auto Mall
Parkway, and as the woman approached Thornton, collided head-on with the truck.
The Volvo caught fire on impact, with the woman trapped inside.
Her
Volvo struck the truck, which was driven by a 26-year-old man from East Palo
Alto. He had two other men inside at the time. The three men were taken to Eden
and Stanford medical centers, and their exact conditions were not known.
