TRASH TRUCK
CATCHES FIRE THAT CAUSES THE AIR CYLINDERS ON TOP OF THE TRUCK TO EXPLODE IN
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA. ONE FIREFIGHTER WAS INJURED BY THE EXPLOSION.
January 27, 2015
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Firefighters had to dodge flying
debris Tuesday morning when they responded to a trash truck fire at 86th Street
and Westfield Boulevard on the north side of Indianapolis.
When the trash truck caught fire, officials say so did
five gas cylinders it was carrying.
As firefighters worked to put out the fire in the trash
truck, that’s when they say the explosions sent metal flying through the air.
Fire crews say one tank traveled as far as 50 feet from
the truck. Another cylinder landed in the front yard of Northview Middle
School.
Three businesses and a parked van were damaged when the
metal pierced windows and dented buildings.
One firefighter was hurt when he was hit by some of the
debris.
Officials say normally during a trash fire, the truck
operator will dump the load, but the driver could not do that since there were
power lines in the area.
The five cylinder tanks that exploded sit at the top of
the trash truck and serve as its fuel source.
