MEDINA COUNTY, OH (WOIO) - The Medina Post of the Ohio
State Highway Patrol is investigating a semi truck vs. Amish buggy accident in
Homerville.
The buggy was traveling eastbound on Greenwich Road, near Pawnee Road around 4:30 p.m., when it was struck by a semi. There were at least two people on buggy and they escaped without injury. However, one horse is dead. Resident Todd Mahoney is used to sharing the road with Amish buggies.
"I was standing on my front porch and saw the Amish guys go by and waved at them like I always do. But then something happened. I heard a bam and I looked up and saw the horse on the ground and the guys jumped off," Mahoney said.
OSP said the horse was alive after the accident, but it's injuries were so severe that nothing could be done. A vet was called to the scene to put the horse down. Troopers say the passengers are lucky to be alive.
"I felt bad for the horse that had to stand there and wait for the vet to approve or disapprove, just suffering," said Brad Mahoney.
The scene was quickly cleared and the horse's body will be retrieved at first opportunity. It's is a sobering reminder of the dangers these rural roads pose to the public, including the Amish, and to the animals that are such an integral part of their lives.
