LAPORTE TWP., PA -
A single-engined propeller plane crashed, Thursday, just yards away from the runway of Merritt's Field, a privately owned airstrip in Laporte Township.
Emergency crews were called to respond to the scene shortly after the accident occurred at 5:45 p.m.
According to information obtained from the Federal Aviation Administration, George Merritt Jenkins, of St. Davids, owns the airfield.
State police said Jenkins was piloting the plane when it crashed.
Police declined to comment any further on the accident, and said details had been passed along to the FAA to investigate.
Arlene Salac, spokesperson for the FAA, said, "A Kinner Sportster B, experimental aircraft, crashed for unknown reasons during takeoff from the Merritt Field Airstrip, Laporte, PA at 5:45 p.m. today. The FAA will investigate."
An FAA registry lists Jenkins as the sole owner of a 1934 Kinner Sportster B bearing tail number N13776.
It is unknown if there were any injuries during the accident.

The aircraft impacted airport terrain shortly after takeoff from Merritt Field Airport (4PN7), Eagles Mere, Pennsylvania. The airplane sustained unreported damage and the sole pilot onboard received minor injuries. :
