One adult is dead and three people are fighting for their
lives after a car collision on Edmonston Road in Beltsville, Maryland around
4:45 a.m. Monday.
Prince George’s County Fire spokesman Mark Brady says two
other people involved in the wreck are not injured.
It’s not clear what caused the crash in the 11300 block of
Edmonston Road.
Edmonston Road is closed between Powder Mill and Old
Baltimore Pike.

KILLED AFTER HE TREAD CAME OFF THE SUV AND CAUSED THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL

APOPKA, FLORIDA
A 2-year-old Apopka girl and her father were killed in a
rollover crash in Martin County.
The family of 12 was inside a Ford Expedition, which went
off the roadway and flipped onto its side on the Turnpike Saturday afternoon.
Investigators said the tread came off the SUV and caused the
driver, Oduver Miranda, to lose control.
Uriel Miranda, 38, died at the scene.
His daughter, Yaretsi Miranda, 2, was transported to St.
Mary’s Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.
Yordi Miranda, 8, was taken to the hospital in critical
condition and passed away Sunday. Neighbors of the family told Channel 9 Yordi
was battling cancer.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the family in the SUV
is from Apopka. All their injuries range from minor to serious.
“The father passed away yesterday with the youngest,” said
neighbor Jessica Garcia.
Authorities said Uriel and the toddler were not wearing
seatbelts.
"There's a good chance if you're not wearing your
seatbelt and you're involved in a rollover, there's a good chance you'll be
ejected," said a trooper.
Neighbors said doctors discovered the children's mother is a
few weeks pregnant.
"She's in shock still, and it's really sad because they
didn't deserve it. They were really good people," said Garcia.
Garcia has been neighbors with the Miranda family for eight
years.
She and other neighbors gathered in disbelief Sunday knowing
the whole Miranda family won’t be returning home.
Some of the children have been through surgery and others
were told they may not survive, leaving neighbors and friends heartbroken.
“They’re crying about it because they used to play with
them,” said Garcia.
Angel Miranda, 9, suffered serious injuries.
Imelda Miranda 34, is in critical but stable condition.
Scarlette Miranda, 10, Brayan Miranda, 5, and Chris Miranda,
3, are in stable condition.
Oduver Miranda, 25, Rolando Miranda, 23, Rudy Miranda, 28
and Edwin Miranda, 7, suffered minor injuries.
The crash is still under investigation.
Many of the children attend Apopka Elementary School.
A teacher there said someone from the school will likely
head to the hospital to visit with the surviving members of the family.

Rhode Island state police say a Massachusetts man is charged
with drunken driving after two people were killed in a car he hit while going
the wrong way on a highway.
State police said 24-year-old Joel Norman of Webster is
being held on $100,000 bail after he was arraigned Sunday on charges of drunken
driving resulting in death, and driving to endanger resulting in death. It
isn't known if he had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.
Police identified the victims as 21-year-old Tiffany Sical
of Providence, the driver of the car struck by Norman's vehicle, and her
passenger, 23-year-old Bryan Rodriguez-Solis of Central Falls. Family members
say they had a 6-year-old daughter and planned to marry in September.
The crash occurred on Route 6 shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday
near Toby Street in Providence.

UNITED STATES STILL HAS ONE OF THE HIGHEST ROAD ACCIDENT
DEATH AND INJURY RATES IN THE WORLD: 34,000 DIE AND 2.5 MILLION INJURED EACH
YEAR.
Despite the improvements in road safety, the United States
has one of the highest death rates at about 1 person dead per 10,000 people.
Unfortunately, only undeveloped countries have higher death rate.
Some states, such as Texas and West Virginia (sorry, WV,
despite your tremendous progress in traffic safety, you are still at the top of
the worst-death-rate list) have death rates of nearly 1.5 percent, i.e., fifty
percent more people die compared to the national death rate.
Approximately 34,000 people are getting killed each
year. In the 1950s and 1960s, about 55,000 people used to die on the
roads – so, there has been improvement in the number of dead.
However, the number of injured is rising. Roughly 2.5
million are injured (yes, you read it correctly – 2.5 million injured) per
year. That is, 1 percent (1%) of the population that is eligible to drive
is injured every year.
It is worse than a war zone out there.
So, please be safe and be on the lookout for weaving-through-the-traffic
drivers, crazy drivers, reckless drivers, sick drivers, medical-condition
drivers, sleepy drivers, negligent drivers, stupid drivers, careless drivers,
drunk drivers, speeding drivers, drugged drivers, texting drivers,
talking-on-the-phone drivers, looking-at-the-GPS drivers, hurry-hurry drivers,
tailgating drivers, upset drivers, eating-while-driving drivers,
putting-the-lipstick-on-while-driving drivers, elderly drivers, and so on.
