DIESEL FUEL SPILLED AS ABANDONED FISHING BOAT SINKS IN HONOLULU HARBOR

HONOLULU, HAWAII

The U.S. Coast Guard and state Department of Transportation are responding to a diesel fuel spill from an abandoned fishing vessel that sank in Honolulu Harbor Monday.

A source contacted the Coast Guard at 6:30 p.m. Sunday to report that the 77-foot fishing vessel Judy K was sinking at Pier 16.

Approximately 150 feet of boom and absorbent pads were deployed to retrieve and contain the sheen coming from the vessel. An estimated 50 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the water before containment boom was put into place.

There was no fishing equipment aboard.

A Marine Safety Information Broadcast has been issued for the entrance to Honolulu Harbor for possible debris caused by the sinking of the Judy K.

Mariners are requested to keep a sharp lookout when transiting in the harbor.
The Coast Guard has opened the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund for response efforts.
