AT LEAST 3 SEPARATE BIG RIG ACCIDENTS SNARLS RUSH HOUR
TRAFFIC AT LOOP 410 AND I-35 IN SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS
January 22, 2014
SAN ANTONIO – An 18-wheeler carrying produce crashed
Thursday morning on the Northeast Side, causing authorities to close down the
interchange of Loop 410 and Interstate 35 for most of the day.
Authorities at the scene initially said crews would need to
work until at least noon to clear the scene of the crash, which happened early
Thursday morning.
As of 3 p.m., the truck was still on the highway, and
traffic on Loop 410 approaching 35 was still backed up for miles.
Texas Department of Transportation spokesman Josh Donat said
crews hope to have the scene cleared before the evening rush hour.
"There are no guarantees," he said. "If that
is a part of your regular commute I would avoid it."
A second 18-wheeler wreck in the lower level southbound
lanes of I-35 caused traffic to back up in the downtown area during afternoon
rush hour. TxDOT tweeted that two semis had collided, and KENS-TV said that a
car was side-swiped. TxDOT said the main lanes are closed, and alternate routes
should be taken.
A third 18-wheeler crash in the northbound lanes of I-35
caused further issues in the afternoon.
Donat said an 18-wheeler jackknifed a short distance from
the first crash around 1 p.m., causing traffic to back up on the interstate to
the south.
That accident cleared around 3 p.m., Donat said
