Russian passenger ship Stepan Arzhakov grounded in the Siberian River Lena. The vessel’s 98 passengers and 11 crew were rescued by Mi-8 helicopters





Two Mi-8 helicopter of Khabarovsk air rescue center of EMERCOM of Russia and the local airline «Polar airlines» flew to the ship «Stepan Arzhakov», which ran aground on the Lena river in kobyayskiy district of Yakutia.

On Saturday morning it became known that the ship «Stepan Arzhakov» from-for a strong lateral wind ran aground 8 kilometers upstream from the village Batmay on the Lena river. Just a distressed ship are 109 people.

On Board ship off the helicopters are rescue teams that are ready to provide assistance and evacuate the passengers and crew.

The first emergency of the ship will take the kids and the elderly. For the evacuation of all 98 passengers and 11 crew members, helicopter pilots will have to make at least five flights.

Evacuated passengers will be transported to temporary shelters with hot meals in the village Bulus Namsky district of the Republic. There’s also people waiting for psychologists who will help them relieve psychological stress. After that, people on four buses will be delivered to Yakutsk.

The rescue operation on the Lena directs the operational headquarters of the emergencies Ministry, deployed in Yakutsk. The situation is kept under control of the government of Yakutia and the Main Department of EMERCOM in the Republic of Sakha.

The Russian passenger ship Stepan Arzhakov grounded in the Siberian River Lena on the weekend. The vessel’s 98 passengers and 11 crew were rescued by helicopter.

The vessel grounded about eight kilometers from the village of Batamai on the way to the city of Yakutsk. The grounding occurred as a result of strong early morning crosswinds, says Russia’s Emergency Ministry.

There were many children and elderly people on board, and the rescue operation lasted for several hours.

Overall, 49 people and eight units took part in the rescue operation.
