THE DALLES, Ore. – A pilot involved in an airplane crash at the Dallesport Airport on Monday was flown to the hospital, an airport spokesperson said.

Emergency responders were called out just after 11 a.m. Monday on reports of an aircraft crash.

The plane's pilot was seriously injured; no word on his or her current condition.

A spokesperson at the airport said the airplane started to leak fuel afterward, but there were no other dangers. He wasn’t sure if the plane was taking off or landing when it crashed.

The pilot was the only person on board.

Dallesport Fire and the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office is on-scene.

A plane crashed upon landing Monday morning at the Columbia Gorge Regional/The Dalles Municipal Airport. The pilot was transported by medical helicopter with injuries.

According to staff at the airport, the pilot lives in the region and flew frequently out of the airport.

Upon hearing the crash, airport staff responded to the crash site, as did the crew of a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter parked at the airport. The Coast Guard crew provided emergency medical care until the arrival of an ambulance crew from the Dallesport Fire Department.

A witness on scene said the plane was approaching to land when a wing appeared to dip and strike the ground.

The plane hit the runway and slid into a taxi way that provides access to a hangar area. Debris was scattered in a wide swath across the runway and into the taxi way.

Airport crews were cleaning up a small amount of fuel spilled from the plane.
