A man who died after being found unresponsive at the GlobalFoundries headquarters in Essex Junction on Monday succumbed to self-inflicted wounds, according to police.

An autopsy Tuesday morning determined the cause of death. The Essex Police Department said: “Due to the nature of this incident, no additional information will be released.”

James Keller, a spokesperson for GlobalFoundries, said the company has grief counselors on location Tuesday for current employees “and have offered ongoing employee support services as well.”

The man’s identity is being withheld, but Keller confirmed he was a GlobalFoundries employee. About 3,000 people work at the Essex Junction campus, where space is also rented to IBM and the state of Vermont.

The man was about 60 years old, according to police, and was taken by ambulance to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington on Monday.

The Essex Police Department and Essex Rescue said they responded to a call at the GlobalFoundries property at 10:18 a.m. Monday and found a man who was unresponsive and receiving CPR from staff. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“The GlobalFoundries community is saddened by this loss and concerned for the family and co-workers,” Keller said Monday. “At this point, we have no further information to share.”

A GlobalFoundries employee who worked the night shift was found unresponsive at the facility in Essex and later pronounced dead, Essex police said this week.

The 60-year-old man was discovered after his shift shortly after 10 a.m. on Monday, Essex police Capt. George Murtie said Tuesday. Later Tuesday morning, Essex police said an autopsy determined the man had died of self-inflicted wounds.

Police declined to release further information about the man "due to the nature of this incident," police stated in a news release Tuesday.

"At no time was there a threat to the public," police said.

Essex police responded to the facility at about 10:20 a.m. Monday and found GlobalFoundries personnel giving CPR to the unresponsive man. The man was taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

An autopsy at the Chief Medical Examiner's Office was conducted Tuesday morning.

GlobalFoundries spokesperson Jim Keller wrote in an email the company was aware of the "serious medical incident."

"The GLOBALFOUNDRIES' community is saddened by this loss and concerned for the family and co-workers," Keller wrote. "At this point, we have no further information to share."
